爱 ài "love" + 憎 zēng "to hate": love and hate, i.e. one’s loves and hatreds, likes and dislikes. Same as the Korean word ae-jeung (愛憎). It pairs the antonyms 爱 and 憎 to span the whole range of the two feelings (爱憎分明 clear-cut in likes and dislikes). It leans more toward "likes and dislikes" than the Korean ae-jeung ("loving yet hating"). 憎 means "to hate" (憎恨, 憎恶); 爱 means "love" (爱情).
