Passage

Sentence structure

Key sentences split into meaning units, showing the role of each part.

车站旁边新开了一家电影院。
Modifier车站旁边place (next to the station)
Modifiernewly (adverb)
Predicate开了opened (le = completion)
Object一家电影院a cinema (measure word jia)

To state existence or appearance, Chinese uses "place + verb + thing": "chezhan pangbian (place) kai le (appeared) yi jia dianyingyuan (a cinema)". "le" marks completion, and the measure word "jia" counts shops and institutions.

那儿的菜又好吃又便宜。
Subject那儿的菜the food there (de modifier)
Predicate又好吃both tasty (you...)
Predicate又便宜and cheap (...you)

Chinese adjectives serve as the predicate directly, with no "shi" ("to be"): "cai + hao chi" ("the food (is) tasty"). You do not insert "is" as in English. "you ... you ..." lists two qualities at once: "both ... and ...".
