Sentence structure

Key sentences split into meaning units, showing the role of each part.

如果还书太晚,每天要交一点儿钱。
Connective如果"if" (condition)
Clause还书太晚returning books too late
Modifier每天every day (time)
Predicate要交must pay (yao + verb)
Object一点儿钱a little money

Chinese "ruguo ... yao/jiu ..." is a conditional: "if ..., then ...". "huan shu" is verb-plus-object ("return books") and "tai wan" shows degree ("too late"). The key is word order: the time word "mei tian" (every day) comes before the verb, and the auxiliary "yao" (must) sits right before the main verb "jiao" (pay).

想认真学习的同学可以去那里。
Modifier想认真学习的relative clause + de ("who want to study hard")
Subject同学students (head noun)
Predicate可以can (auxiliary)
Predicatego (main verb)
Object那里there (place)

In Chinese, whatever modifies a noun is bundled with "de" and always comes before the noun: "xiang renzhen xuexi de + tongxue" (who want to study + students). This is the opposite of an English relative clause (who...), which follows the noun. The auxiliary "keyi" precedes the main verb "qu" to mark possibility or permission.
