文 is one of the most philosophically charged etymologies in the entire CJK system. The oracle bone form depicts a person facing forward with crossed lines tattooed on the chest — body decoration / patterns inscribed on flesh. The original meaning was "tattoo / pattern / decoration." From this concrete origin grew the abstract meaning that defines Chinese civilization itself: woven patterns of marks → text → writing → literature → culture. The metaphorical leap is profound — civilization is the act of inscribing meaningful patterns on the world.

The modern shape still hints at the chest-with-cross-marks origin, though the body has been abstracted into geometry. Despite being a simple radical, 文 anchors the entire conceptual vocabulary of literacy and culture.

Korean reading "mun." 文章 (munjang, sentence / written piece), 文化 (munhwa, culture), 文學 (munhak, literature), 文字 (munja, written character), 英文 (yeongmun, English text / writing), 古文 (gomun, classical Chinese text). Almost every Korean word for "writing, literature, humanities, language" includes 文. Korean university humanities departments are collectively called (inmunhak, "human-pattern study") — pure 文 territory.

Mandarin wén, 2nd tone. 文化 (wénhuà, culture), 文学 (wénxué, literature), 文字 (wénzì, written language), 文章 (wénzhāng, article / essay), and the elegant naming system: any language name + 文 = "the writing of that language." 中文 (zhōngwén, Chinese), 英文 (yīngwén, English), 日文 (rìwén, Japanese), 法文 (fǎwén, French). One character, applied as a suffix, generates the entire linguistic taxonomy.

Japanese has two on-readings, distinguishing semantic ranges. ブン (bun) for the writing/literature/sentence sense — 文章 (bunshō, sentence), 文化 (bunka, culture), 文学 (bungaku, literature), 作文 (sakubun, composition essay). モン (mon) for the request/grievance/clause sense — 注文 (chūmon, order — for food at a restaurant or merchandise from a vendor), 文句 (monku, complaint / verbal grievance). The kun-reading ふみ (fumi) means "letter / written correspondence" and survives in classical poetry and elegant compounds: 恋文 (koibumi, love letter). The clean ブン/モン split marks one of the most useful Japanese on-reading splits to learn.

Memory aid: a person with patterns inscribed on the chest — body decoration became writing, became literature, became culture itself.
