票 originally depicted flames rising lightly upward — the lightweight, drifting movement of fire flickers. From this image of weightlessness grew the meaning "lightweight slip of paper" → token / certificate / ticket. The 示 (altar) component at the bottom was added later and bears little direct relation to the modern meanings; lexicographers placed 票 under the altar radical for filing convenience rather than etymological accuracy.

Modern Mandarin uses 票 as the universal generic term for any kind of ticket, slip, or vote token: 票 (piào), 车票 (chēpiào, train / bus ticket), 机票 (jīpiào, airline ticket — central word for booking flights), 门票 (ménpiào, "door-ticket" = admission ticket / entrance fee), 邮票 (yóupiào, postage stamp), 发票 (fāpiào, invoice / receipt — essential business vocabulary in China), 投票 (tóupiào, to vote). The Noun + 票 pattern is highly productive.

Japanese on-reading ヒョウ (hyō) — 投票 (tōhyō, voting), 票 alone reads ひょう and means "vote / ballot." Japanese formal contexts use 票 for vote-related concepts: 票数 (hyōsū, number of votes), 開票 (kaihyō, ballot counting). For everyday tickets, however, Japanese prefers 切符 (kippu, ticket — for trains, theaters) or チケット (chiketto, English loanword), reserving 票 specifically for the political-vote and formal-document senses. The split: 切符 = transit ticket; 票 = vote / formal token.
