Oracle bone 中 shows a vertical line piercing the center of a flag's waving banner — a flagpole planted at the heart of a village square to mark "here is the center". The flag streamers blow to either side, but the pole stays. Identical across 繁體 / 新字体 / 简体.

The character names China itself: 中国 / 中國 (Zhōngguó / Chūgoku, "Middle Kingdom") — the self-designation that traces back over two thousand years to the conception of the Chinese realm as the civilizational center surrounded by peripheral peoples.
