The stroke order..
The character for "ice" is one of the most visually divergent across the three CJK regions. The original 冰 is a compound ideograph: 冫 (the "two-stroke ice" radical, depicting two crystals or ice grain marks) + 水 (water). The composite reads as "water that has crystallized" = ice. Then the regions split decisively: Korea and Mainland China retain the traditional 冰. Japan adopted an alternate variant 氷 (which visually resembles 永, "eternity") as the standard form. Three regions, two scripts for the same character — a classic CJK-divergence case where seeing 氷 vs 冰 instantly tells you which writing system you are reading.
Korean reading "bing." 氷河 (binghha, glacier), 氷山 (bingsan, iceberg), 氷壁 (bingbyeok, ice wall — used in mountaineering), 解氷 (haebing, thaw — used both literally and metaphorically for political détente: "thawing of bilateral relations"), 氷板 (bingpan, sheet of ice — Korean roads in winter).
Mandarin bīng, 1st tone. 冰 (bīng, ice), 冰水 (bīngshuǐ, iced water), 冰山 (bīngshān, iceberg — also used metaphorically: 冰山一角 bīngshān yī jiǎo "tip of the iceberg"), 冰箱 (bīngxiāng, "ice-box" = refrigerator), 冰淇淋 (bīngqílín, ice cream — a phonetic loan transliterating "ice cream" through 淇淋). 冰 is everyday spoken vocabulary.
Japanese on-reading ヒョウ (hyō) — 氷山 (hyōzan, iceberg), 氷河 (hyōga, glacier), 解氷 (kaihyō, thaw). Kun-reading こおり (kōri) — 氷 (kōri, ice), 氷水 (kōrimizu, ice water). Most beloved Japanese summer compound: かき氷 (kakigōri, "shaved ice") — the iconic Japanese summer dessert of finely shaved ice topped with flavored syrup. かき氷 stands for the entire Japanese feeling of obon-season heat relief, with red bean (azuki) topping the most traditional variety.
Memory aid: Japan = 氷, Mainland China = 冰, Korea = 冰 (traditional). One concept, two scripts. Both come from "water that has crystallized" — the ice radical 冫 marking the change.
