The stroke order..
In oracle bone script, 五 was a simple X — two crossed lines, encoding "intersection" rather than literally five strokes. The X represents the meeting of opposing forces, the central balance point. Later seal-script versions added a horizontal line above and below the X, producing the modern form. Identical across 繁體 / 新字体 / 简体.
Five is mathematically and culturally central in East Asia. It is the count of the Five Phases (五行 wǔxíng / gogyō): 木 (wood), 火 (fire), 土 (earth), 金 (metal), 水 (water) — the foundational classification system that shaped Chinese medicine, cooking, color symbolism, music theory, and the names of weekdays. Other "five" concepts: 五感 (five senses), 五味 (five tastes: sweet/sour/salty/bitter/spicy), 五穀 (five grains), 五倫 (five Confucian relationships).
Mandarin: wǔ, dipping 3rd tone. 五月 (wǔyuè, May), 五十 (wǔshí, fifty), 五星 (wǔxīng, five stars — as on the Chinese flag, 五星红旗). The number is considered neutral-to-lucky.
Japanese: on-reading ゴ (go) for everyday counting — 五月 (gogatsu, May), 五人 (gonin, five people), 五分 (gofun, five minutes). Kun-reading いつ (itsu) survives in 五日 (itsuka, fifth day of month — irregular but high-frequency) and 五つ (itsutsu, five items). The ゴ shorthand became the brand name "Go" for the board game (originally 碁).
Financial form: 伍 prevents alteration on contracts. Note that 伍 is also a common surname in Chinese.
Memory aid: an X-shaped intersection between two horizontal lines — top and bottom limits with crossing in the middle.
