橋 is a phonetic-semantic compound: 木 (tree / wood) + 喬 (qiáo, "tall / lofty"). 喬 supplies both sound and a hint of meaning: a high arched structure made of wood. Ancient bridges across CJK regions were typically wooden plank or wooden beam constructions, hence the wood radical. Mainland simplified to 桥.
Korean reading "gyo." 鐵橋 (cheolgyo, iron bridge), 陸橋 (yukgyo, "land bridge" = pedestrian overpass over a road), 吊橋 (jogyo, suspension bridge), 橋梁 (gyoryang, bridge — formal civil-engineering term), 架橋 (gagyo, "spanning a bridge" = bridging metaphorically — used in "playing a bridging role"). Korean bridge architecture extends from 한강대교 to 서해대교.
Mandarin qiáo, 2nd tone (simplified 桥). 桥 (qiáo, bridge), 大桥 (dàqiáo, large bridge), 过桥 (guòqiáo, "to cross a bridge"). And the most beloved Mandarin culinary association: 过桥米线 (guòqiáo mǐxiàn, "crossing-the-bridge rice noodles") — a famous Yunnan specialty named for the legend of a wife who carried hot soup across a bridge to her husband studying on a remote island, the noodles cooking in her bowl as she walked. The dish is now a regional culinary icon throughout China.
Japanese on-reading キョウ (kyō) — 鉄橋 (tekkyō, iron bridge), 陸橋 (rikkyō, overpass), 歩道橋 (hodōkyō, "walk-road-bridge" = pedestrian footbridge — extremely common over Japanese streets). Kun-reading はし (hashi) — 橋 (hashi, bridge), 橋渡し (hashiwatashi, "bridging" = mediation, intermediary role). Japan's bridge names are nationally famous: 日本橋 (Nihonbashi, "Japan Bridge" — Tokyo's iconic kilometer-zero bridge from which all distances were measured during the Edo period), 明石海峡大橋 (Akashi Kaikyō Ōhashi, the world's longest suspension bridge connecting Kobe to Awaji Island).
Memory aid: tall (喬) wood (木) — the elevated wooden structure spanning a gap = bridge.
