Equal Sharing

Equal Sharing

Equal sharing splits things fairly among people to see how many each one gets. Share 15 apples among 4 people and each gets 3 with 3 left over, which is called the remainder. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor, and divisor × quotient + remainder equals the original number. Change the total and the number of people to fill the plates, then try the check yourself.

Sharing Fairly!
🍎 Share Apples with Friends
①15 apples shared equally by 4 people
②Each gets 3, with 3 left over
③This is division!
Sharing on Plates
15
4
💡 Remainder Rule
①Remainder is always smaller than divisor
②Remainder = 0 → divides evenly!
③Pass one at a time → fair sharing
Check by Multiplying
🔍 Checking Division
①Divisor × Quotient + Remainder = Original
②4 × 3 + 3 = 15 ✓
③Use check to verify your answer
Summary
Meaning of Division
Total ÷ People = Each share
Equal sharing tells how much each gets
Division with Remainder
15 ÷ 4 = 3 ... 3
If not even, remainder appears
Check Formula
Divisor × Quotient + Remainder = Original
Multiply then add remainder = original
🎯 Key Points
①Division = "equal sharing"
②Remainder always smaller than divisor
③Check by multiplication
④Remainder 0 = "divides evenly"
⑤Used in real life for sharing and grouping
Examples and Unit Test
Example 1
If 15 apples are shared equally among 4 people, how many does each get and how many are left?
1
See how many 4s fit in 15: 4, 8, 12 → 3 times.
2
4 × 3 = 12, 15 − 12 = 3. So each gets 3, with 3 left over.
3 each, remainder 3
The remainder is always smaller than the divisor (4).
Example 2
Check whether the answer 15 ÷ 4 = 3 R 3 is correct.
1
Check formula: Divisor × Quotient + Remainder = Original.
2
4 × 3 + 3 = 12 + 3 = 15. It matches the original, so it is correct!
15 (check passes)
If divisor × quotient + remainder equals the original, the work is correct.
Unit Test
What is the quotient and remainder of 20 ÷ 6?
Q 3, R 1
Q 3, R 2
Q 4, R 0
Q 2, R 8
② Q 3, R 2
1
6 × 3 = 18 and 20 − 18 = 2.
2
The remainder 2 is smaller than the divisor 6, so 20 ÷ 6 = 3 R 2.
