There is no perfect security
Putting one lock on your front door makes it safer. Two locks, safer still. So what about ten? Surely safer, but now you have to turn ten keys every time you come home. And it costs ten times as much. At some point you start to ask: where is the line that feels good enough? The truth is, security has no end. Making it safer always makes it more inconvenient and more expensive. So the real question is not how to become perfect, but where to stop.
There is no perfect
Coming this far, we have seen many defenses.
Locking with encryption, checking integrity with a hash,
proving who you are with a password.
So if we combine them all, does it become perfect?
Sadly, no.
Any lock, given enough time and effort,
still leaves a chance of being shaken.
The bar that tries to push security to 100
never quite touches 100, no matter how hard you push.
The point called perfect always sits just beyond your fingertips.
Push security higher. The bar approaches 100 but never quite touches it. Perfect only gets closer.
Push and push, the bar's tip never reached 100.
This is security's first truth.
Perfect is not a place you can arrive at.
But that is no reason to be discouraged.
The moment you accept there is no perfect,
the question gets smarter.
Instead of how to become perfect,
you start asking how safe is safe enough.
And that enough always comes with a price.
Next we look at that price.
Safer means less convenient
Why don't we push the bar all the way?
Even though we could.
The reason is simple: the price grows too large.
The longer and more complex a password, the safer,
but it is a hassle to type each time and easy to forget.
The more layers of authentication, the safer,
but each login gains a step.
Raise security one notch
and convenience drops one notch
while cost rises one notch.
The three are tied on one line, trading off against each other.
Raise the security level one notch at a time. As it climbs, safety fills up but convenience shrinks and cost grows.
Each time we raised a notch, the three moved together.
When one got better, another got worse.
This is the trade-off, the swap.
There is no road to more safety for free.
Safety always pays its price in convenience or cost.
So cranking it all the way up is not the answer.
Too low and it is dangerous,
too high and no one can use it.
So where should the bar sit?
That answer depends on how you handle risk.
Not removing risk but managing it
If there is no perfect, you cannot make risk zero either.
So is security a losing battle? No.
You just change your thinking.
Do not try to remove risk; manage it.
When you cross the street, the risk is not zero.
Still, we look both ways and cross.
We shrink risk down to a size we can accept.
Security is the same.
Block the big risks first to make it small enough,
and live with the small risk that remains.
Block the biggest risks first, in turn. Risk never hits zero, but it is managed down to a small, acceptable size.

But it never went all the way to zero.
And that is fine. That is the point.
When the remaining risk is small enough,
we decide to accept it.
This is called managing risk.
Instead of blocking endlessly, you block the big ones cleverly
and decide to carry the small ones.
Then, is an acceptable size
the same for everyone? Next we look.
A balance that fits the situation
Acceptable risk differs from person to person.
If the notepad where you jotted today's lunch leaks,
it is only a little embarrassing, not a big deal.
So a heavy lock would be overkill.
But if a bank vault leaks, that is a disaster.
So you accept the inconvenience and make the lock thick.
The weight of what you protect sets the balance point.
The more precious, the more you move the bar toward safety,
the lighter, the more you move it toward convenience.
There is not one right answer; it differs by situation.
Pick each situation. For a light notepad the balance leans to convenience, for a heavy bank vault it leans to safety.
The same lock did not fit both situations.
A light lock suited the notepad,
a thick lock suited the bank vault.
Good security is not the strongest security
but the security that fits the situation.
