  1. Skim the term at a glance on the next page.
  2. Print the lesson you need. Each lesson is three A4 sheets: plan, worksheet, cards or tickets.
  3. Gather the few everyday items under “You need” on the plan. Tray samples only; no chemical reagents.
  4. Open the free interactive unit on your board or projector. Every plan tells you which picture to show and when.
  5. Teach straight from the plan. Timings, talk prompts, misconceptions and answers are all on the one page.

No science background needed

This pack is written for the busy generalist teacher. Each plan explains the science idea in plain words, lists the misconceptions children bring, and gives model answers, so you can walk in and teach it even if Earth science was never your subject.

Two ways to run each lesson

Every lesson works as one 60-minute block, or as two 30-minute sessions. The split point is marked in every plan. Ten lessons fill a weekly science slot for a whole term, or up to twenty shorter sessions if your timetable runs small blocks.

How the sequence builds

Lesson 1 teaches how to observe one rock. Lesson 2 lines samples up to compare. Lesson 3 shows that soil is a mixture. Lesson 4 sorts soil, rock and mineral. Lesson 5 asks why these Earth resources matter for people. Lessons 6 to 8 deepen the science: soil layers, a rock hunt, and minerals as the ingredients of rocks. Lesson 9 turns to caring for soil and local resources in an Australian setting, and Lesson 10 is the presentation and final check.

A note home

Dear families

This term in science, Year 3 becomes a class of Earth detectives. We look closely at soils, rocks and minerals, compare how they look and feel, and find out why they matter as resources for people.

Every investigation points to a few big ideas: an observable property is something you can see or feel; soil is a mixture; rocks are often mixes of minerals; and the ground under our feet supplies materials for building, farming and roads.

What to ask your scientist

A small safety note: at school we use tray samples only, with no chemical tests. At home, an adult helps with outdoor collecting, and we leave natural places as we found them.

Test a rock

Children learn that an observable property is something you can see or feel, and they test one rock for colour, hardness, texture, shine and layers. This lesson lays the ground for the term: you cannot compare soils, rocks and minerals until the class can describe what they notice.

Write property on the board: something you can see or feel. Model one test on a class rock: colour first, then texture.

Ask: If I only look from far away, which properties can I still find?

Pairs work through the property cards and fill the worksheet table. Hardness is a gentle fingernail rub only: no tools, no chisels, no hammering.

Share one surprising property. Finish the sentence at the bottom of the worksheet together.

Ask: Which property was hardest to decide? Why might two people disagree?

Compare three samples

Children line up three samples and compare the same properties side by side. Comparing means asking the same questions of each sample, then reading down the columns. This builds straight on Lesson 1: last week we tested one rock; today we use that skill to see how samples differ.

Tables test A, B and C for colour, hardness and shine. One child records while partners observe. Rotate roles.

Children complete the similarity and difference sentences on the worksheet. Share two pairs of findings with the class.
10 minCircle up
Ask which sample was softest and which was most shiny. Link back to fair comparing.

Ask: If we only looked at colour, would we still know chalk is different from granite?

What is soil made of?

Children discover that soil is not one pure thing but a mixture: bits of rock, sand, clay and old plant matter. Spreading a dry handful on paper makes the parts easier to see. This is the first lesson that sets soil apart from solid rock samples.

20 minSpread and spot
Pairs spread a dry teaspoon of soil on paper. They hunt for rock bits, sand grains and dark plant matter, tick the cards they can match, and sketch what they see.

Children complete the worksheet parts list and the sentence about mixture.

Agree the class definition of soil.

Sort the samples

Children sort samples into soil, rock or mineral and give a reason for each choice. The simple rules are: soil is a loose mixture with plant matter; a rock is a solid lump made of minerals; a mineral is one pure natural substance, often with a regular shape. Sorting makes the boundaries clear.

Soil layers jar model

Children shake a jar of soil and water, then watch layers settle. The model shows that soil is made of different-sized parts, and that heavier pieces sink first. It deepens Lesson 3: soil is a mixture you can partly unmix by settling.

Groups put a few spoons of soil in a jar, add water to about two-thirds full, lid on tight, shake hard ten times, then stand the jar still. No opening lids mid-test.
20 minWatch and draw
After a few minutes of settling (longer is better), children draw layers on the worksheet and label with the cards. Compare early and later looks if time allows.
12 minCircle up
Agree which layer is usually near the bottom.

Ask: Why do the heaviest pieces settle first? What still floats or stays cloudy?

Running two half-sessions instead? Shake in Session A and leave jars overnight on a safe shelf. Start Session B with a quiet look at the settled jars, then Watch and draw.

Rock hunt

Children apply their property tests on a supervised outdoor hunt or on a rich tray of mixed samples indoors. The hunt is about careful observing and recording, not collecting a pile of rocks to take home. Leave natural sites as found unless your school has an agreed keep tray.

Minerals vs rocks

Children learn a simple, accurate model for Year 3: minerals are ingredients; rocks are mixes of those ingredients stuck together. A speckled rock is the everyday proof. This lesson tightens the sort from Lesson 4 with a clearer scientific story.

Talk about a fruit salad: fruit pieces are the ingredients; the salad is the mix.

Ask: If minerals are the fruit pieces, what is the rock?

10 minOn the board
Open “Compare three samples” and highlight granite (rock) beside quartz (mineral) (see the board box). Read the property differences, then state the ingredients idea.
15 minSpeckled rock look
Tables examine a speckled rock and try to spot at least two different-looking parts (pale grains, dark flecks, glassy bits). No breaking samples.
15 minSort the cards
Sort mix cards into mineral ingredients and rock mixes. Check as a class, then children complete the worksheet.
15 minCircle up
Write the two sentences on the board together.

Ask: Can a rock ever be made of only one mineral? (Yes, sometimes; still call it a rock if it is a solid rock body.)

Caring for soil

Children explore why soil and local Earth resources need care, with Australian settings such as gardens, dunes, farms and building sites. No brand names. The science link is clear: if soil is a mixture that grows food and rocks are resources we use carefully, then looking after them is part of using them wisely.

The summative lesson, run as a celebration. Children present one favourite sample (or a drawing of one) using property words and the soil / rock / mineral ideas, visit each other’s work in a short gallery walk, then sit the final check sheet quietly and alone. The term closes with the on-screen quiz played as a class game.
