Five days of lessons for Year 1 Statistics. Print this pack and the week is prepared: each day has a one-page plan and a student worksheet, plus cut-out category cards and tally tables, a mini-check and every answer.

Start here: five minutes to Monday

  1. Skim the week at a glance on the next page.
  2. Print the five days. Each day is two A4 sheets: a plan and a worksheet.
  3. Cut out the two card sheets once; they are reused all week.
  4. Open the free interactive unit on your board. Every plan tells you which picture to show and when.
  5. Teach straight from the plan. Timings, talk prompts, things to watch for and answers are all on the one page.

No maths background needed

This pack is written for the busy generalist teacher. Each plan explains the idea in plain words, lists what young children muddle, and gives model answers, so you can walk in and teach it.

One day, one lesson

The five lessons fill a week of maths, one lesson of about 40 minutes a day. Run them in order: each day stands on the one before. Every lesson can also split into a short carpet session and a table task if your timetable runs small blocks.

How the week builds

Day 1 chooses a question with clear groups and collects an answer from each child; Day 2 learns the tally, four upright strokes with the fifth swung across as a gate; Day 3 tallies a set of answers with one mark each and totals the groups; Day 4 dresses the same data as tally marks, a list, objects, drawings and symbols; and Day 5 asks why we record at all. It builds on collecting and sorting from Foundation, and it opens the way to tables and column graphs later in Year 1.

Ask the class

Data begins with a question we can answer by asking. A good data question has clear groups to sort into: apple, banana or orange, not "what is nice?" Today the class picks one such question and collects an answer from everyone, one person, one answer. The big idea for a young child: we do not guess what the class likes, we ask, and everyone lands in one group.

Lesson flow (about 40 minutes)

10 minOne good question
On the carpet, agree the question: which fruit do we like best, apple, banana or orange? Three clear groups, so every child can answer in one.

Ask: Could we answer “what is the best food?” by sorting into groups? Why is fruit easier?

20 minAsk around the room
Children ask a few friends and write each answer in the right row on the worksheet, then count how many are in each group.

Ask: You asked Sam once. How many answers does Sam give? Why only one?

10 minCount each group
Read the other class’s counts on the worksheet together and count each group aloud. Tomorrow we learn a faster way to record.

Ask: Six answers for apple. Is there a quicker way to keep count than writing every word?

Two half-sessions instead? End Session A after agreeing the question. Start Session B by asking around the room, then counting each group.

Open the interactive unit and show “Ask the class”. Press “Ask the next classmate” to add one answer at a time; each classmate drops into exactly one of the fixed groups, so the class watches the data build up. Press “Start again” to ask a fresh round.

The tally gate

Writing every answer as a word is slow. A tally is built for speed: one stroke for each answer, and every fifth stroke swings across the four before it like a gate. Now the marks come in gates of five, so we skip-count the gates and add on the leftover strokes. Seven is one gate and two more; twelve is two gates and two more.

Draw four strokes on the board, then a fifth across them. Count a few gates by fives. The gate makes five easy to see at a glance.

Ask: Four strokes, then one across. How many is a full gate? How do we count two gates?

20 minDraw and read
Children draw the tally for each number on the worksheet, then read two given tallies back as numbers.

Ask: Seven: how many full gates can you make? What is left over?

10 minSkip-count check
Read the class tally together: point to each gate and count 5, 10, 15, then add the last few strokes.

One mark each

A tally is only trustworthy if every person gives exactly one mark. Miss someone and the count is too low; mark someone twice and it is too high. Today children work through a set of answers one at a time, tick off each as they go, total each group, and check the totals add back to the number of people.

Read a short list of answers aloud, tallying on the board. Cross each answer off as you mark it, so none is missed or repeated.

Ask: How do I make sure I mark each child once? What could I cross off to keep my place?

20 minTally the list
Children tally the printed list of nine answers into the table, crossing each off, then total each row.

Ask: You have marked nine children. What should the three totals add up to?

10 minDoes it add up
Share the totals: Dog 4, Cat 3, Fish 2. Add them: 4 and 3 and 2 make 9, the number of answers. The tally checks out.

Two half-sessions instead? End Session A after the class tally. Start Session B with the printed list to tally alone.

Show “One mark each”. Tap each classmate once to record their drink order; each tap adds exactly one mark, and tapping the same child again is refused, so no one is counted twice. Press “Start again” to tally a fresh class.

Same data, five costumes

The same data can wear many costumes. Four apples and two bananas can be shown as tally marks, as a written list, as blocks or counters, as little drawings, or as symbols. The costume changes, but the data underneath is exactly the same: still four apples and two bananas. Choosing a form is about what is clearest, not about changing the answer.

Ask: All three of your boxes should agree. How many apples in each? How many bananas?

Compare the costumes. Which is quickest to count from? Which is nicest to look at? There is no single right answer.

The fading memory

Why write data down at all? Because memory fades. Hold five orders in your head and by the end of the day some have slipped away; a tally on paper is still there tomorrow, and anyone can check it or share it. Today children feel the difference, then record a real class count themselves. Then the mini-check shows what each child can do.

Read out six quick orders and ask the class to remember them all without writing. Ask a few children to say them back; some will be lost.

Ask: That was hard to hold in our heads. What would have kept every order safe?

20 minRecord it now
Pick a real class question and count it live. Children keep a tally on the worksheet, one mark each, then total the groups.

Ask: Now our count is written down. Could we check it tomorrow? Could we show another class?

10 minRead it back
Read the tally back together. Because it is recorded, the answer is still here, exactly as we counted it. Then hand out the mini-check.

Two half-sessions instead? Do the remembering game in Session A. Record the class count and sit the mini-check in Session B.

Show “The fading memory”. Press “Just remember” and add orders with “Next order”; the earlier ones fade away. Press “Write it down” and add them again; this time the record holds every one. Press “Start again” to replay it.

Every tally answer is verified against a gate of five (four upright strokes crossed by the fifth).

  2. 9 (one gate is 5, and 4 more strokes: 5 and 4 make 9).
