Sharing and grouping: a week of ready-to-teach maths

Start here: five minutes to Monday

  1. Skim the week at a glance on the next page.
  2. Print the five days. Each day is two A4 sheets: a plan and a worksheet.
  3. Cut out the two card sheets once; the counters, templates and mats are reused all week.
  4. Open the free interactive unit on your board. Every plan tells you which picture to show and when.
  5. Teach straight from the plan. Timings, talk prompts, misconceptions and answers are all on the one page.

No maths background needed

This pack is written for the busy generalist teacher. Each plan explains the idea in plain words, lists the misconceptions children bring, and gives model answers, so you can walk in and teach it.

One day, one lesson

The five lessons fill a week of maths, one lesson of about 40 minutes a day. Run them in order: each day stands on the one before. Every lesson can also split into a short warm-up and a main session if your timetable runs small blocks.

How the week builds

Day 1 shares a collection out fairly; Day 2 packs one into equal groups; Day 3 tells the two questions apart, how many each against how many groups; Day 4 meets the leftover, the honest answer when a pile will not come out even; and Day 5 models a real Saturday fundraiser. It builds on counting in groups and on adding and taking away, and it opens the way to division, long before that word or its symbol appears.

Share it out

Children share a collection by dealing it out one at a time — one for you, one for you, around and around — until each share is equal. Hands come first all week: dealing it out convinces faster than telling, and it makes the answer appear on every plate at once.

Lesson flow (about 40 minutes)

8 minOne for you, one for you
Share 10 counters between two plates by dealing them out, one at a time, going back and forth. Stop when the pile is gone and count each plate.

Ask: How do we keep it fair? Do both plates end with the same?

24 minDeal it out
Pairs share collections onto plates: 12 among 3, then 8 among 4, then 15 among 5. They deal one at a time, then count each plate and record how many each.

Ask: You still have some in your hand. Where does the next one go so it stays equal?

8 minCount each share
Show a finished share; children say how many are on each plate and how they know it is fair.

Ask: Every plate has the same. How did dealing in turn make that happen?

Two half-sessions instead? End Session A after 12 among 3. Start Session B by dealing 8 among 4, then go on to 15 among 5.

On the board
Open the interactive unit and show “Deal them out”. Press “Deal one” again and again to share the strawberries one at a time, going round the plates, and watch each plate fill equally. Press “New share” for a fresh collection, or “Start again” to redeal the same one.

Fill the bags

Yesterday we shared a collection between plates. Today we do the other kind of splitting: we fix how big each bag is, fill equal bags of that size, and let the pile decide when to stop. The answer is how many bags we filled.

Take 12 counters and fill bags of 4, one bag at a time. Count the bags together as the pile empties.

Ask: Every bag must hold the same. How many bags of four did the pile make?

Pairs make equal bags: 12 in bags of 3, then 10 in bags of 2, then 20 in bags of 5. They fill each bag full, then count the bags.

Ask: Which number stays the same, the size of each bag or the number of bags?

8 minCount the bags
Show a finished set of bags; children say how many bags, not how many counters.

Ask: Are all the bags full to the same size? A half-full bag is not an equal bag.

Same collection, two questions

Twelve lollies can be split two ways, and the collection never changes — only the question does. Share among 4 friends and the question is how many each. Pack into bags of 4 and the question is how many bags. Today children learn to hear which question a story is really asking.

Take 12 counters. First share them among 4 plates (3 each); then gather the same 12 into bags of 4 (3 bags). Write both answers where the class can see.

Ask: Sharing among 4 gave 3 each. Bags of 4 gave 3 bags. Which words told us which question?

24 minName the question
Pairs read each story, decide sharing or grouping, then act it out and answer. Some stories share; some group; the number is often the same.

Ask: Does the story ask how many EACH, or how many GROUPS? That is how you know.

8 minSort them out
Read two stories aloud; children thumbs to the left for sharing, right for grouping, and say why.

Ask: The answer to sharing is how many each. The answer to grouping is how many groups. Can they land on the same number?

Share 13 counters among 4 plates by dealing in turn. Each plate ends with 3, and 1 is left in the hand. Set it aside where all can see it.

Ask: Every plate has 3. Can we deal the last one and keep it fair? So what do we do with it?

24 minShare, group, name the leftover
Pairs solve problems that do not come out even: share 11 among 3, put 14 into bags of 5, put 9 into bags of 4. Each time they keep the parts equal and count the leftover.

Ask: How many does each part get, and how many are left over that will not make another equal part?

Show a finished problem; children say the whole answer, both parts.

Ask: Three each and one left over. Why is naming the leftover the honest answer?

Sausage sizzle Saturday

It is fundraiser day. A community sausage sizzle is exactly this week’s maths: share the food so each plate is equal, or pack it into equal groups. Today the week comes together in a real story — draw it, plan it, solve it, and check the answer against the story.

Model the first problem together: 24 sausages onto 6 plates. Ask sharing or grouping, draw 6 plates, deal in turn, then count each plate.

Ask: Onto 6 plates, kept equal: this is a sharing question. How many sausages on each plate?

24 minModel the stall
Children solve the stall problems: 24 sausages onto 6 plates, then 18 sausages into rolls of 2. Each time they draw, solve with counters, and write the answer sentence.

Ask: Rolls of 2 is a grouping question. Count the rolls: 2, 4, 6 and on. How many rolls?

8 minThe mini-check
Hand out the end-of-week mini-check. Children work on their own; it revisits the week with fresh numbers.
