Start here: five minutes to Monday

  1. Skim the week at a glance on the next page.
  2. Print the five days. Each day is two A4 sheets: a plan and a worksheet.
  3. Cut out the two card sheets once; they are reused all week.
  4. Open the free interactive unit on your board. Every plan tells you which picture to show and when.
  5. Teach straight from the plan. Timings, talk prompts, misconceptions and answers are all on the one page.

No maths background needed

This pack is written for the busy generalist teacher. Each plan explains the idea in plain words, lists the muddles children bring, and gives model answers, so you can walk in and teach it.

One day, one lesson

The five lessons fill a week of maths, one lesson of about 40 minutes a day. Run them in order: the bar model on Day 1 is the picture every later day draws on, and each strategy stands on the one before. Every lesson can also split into a short warm-up and a main session if your timetable runs small blocks.

How the week builds

Day 1 sees a whole as two parts on a bar and learns the pairs that make ten. Day 2 adds by counting on from the bigger number. Day 3 bridges through ten, splitting the smaller number to make ten first. Day 4 turns the bar around to find a missing part, which is how taking away feels easy. Day 5 puts it all into a birds-on-the-wire story. It builds on part-part- whole to ten from Foundation, and it opens the way to addition and subtraction within a hundred.

The part-part-whole bar

A bar is one whole. Split it and you have two parts; the two parts always join back to the same whole. This one picture carries the whole week: adding is joining the parts, and taking away is finding a part that is missing. Today we meet the bar and learn the pairs that make ten by heart.

A small handful of counters, up to twenty per child, in two colours if you can. The part-part- whole bar mat (cut-out sheet 1), one per pair. The worksheet, one per child.

Lesson flow (about 40 minutes)

10 minFill the bar
Each pair lays ten counters along the top of the bar mat, then pushes some down into each part below.

Ask: Ten counters fill the whole bar. Push some into this part and the rest into that part. How many in each?

20 minPairs that make ten
Pairs find every way to make ten on the bar: six and four, seven and three, five and five, and so on, recording each pair. Then they try a whole of nine and a whole of eight the same way.

Ask: You have six here. How many more fill the whole ten? Count up: seven, eight, nine, ten.

10 minSay the whole story
Show a bar with two parts; children read it both ways.

Ask: Six and four make ten. And ten is six and four. Say both ways.

Two half-sessions instead? End Session A after filling the bar. Start Session B by rebuilding a whole of ten, then finding a new pair of parts.

On the board
Open the interactive unit and show “The part-part-whole bar”. It is one bar of ten. Slide the divider left and right: the two parts change, but they always join back to ten. Stop on a few splits and read each one aloud with the class, both ways.

Count on, not over

To add, you do not need to count from one every time. Hold the bigger number in your head and count on the rest. For eight and three, start at eight and say nine, ten, eleven: three counts on, and you are there. Counting on is faster and leaves fewer places to slip.

Write eight and three. Ask which to hold and which to count on. Hop along the big track: land on eight, then hop three, saying nine, ten, eleven.

Ask: Do we start at three or at eight? Start at the bigger one. Now count on three.

20 minCount on together
Children work the worksheet sums on their number track: circle the bigger number, then count on with jumps. Fingers back up the track.

Ask: Put the bigger number in your head. Hold up the smaller on your fingers, then count them on.

10 minQuick adds
Call a sum; children count on and hold up the total on their fingers.

Ask: Nine and three. Start at nine: ten, eleven, twelve. Show me twelve.

Show “Count on, not over”. It starts at the bigger number and hops on the smaller one, one step at a time, so the class can count each hop aloud. Stop on the total and read the whole sum before you move to the next.

Bridge through ten

Ten is the easiest number to add to. So when a sum climbs past ten, make ten first. For eight and five, give two of the five to the eight to make ten, then add the three that is left: ten and three is thirteen. Splitting the smaller number to build a ten is the strategy that carries adding for years to come.

10 minFill the ten first
Put eight counters in one ten-frame. Add five: two finish the ten, three go in the next frame.

Ask: Eight is in. How many more fill this ten? Move two across. Now how many are left to add?

20 minMake ten, then add
Children work the worksheet sums with two ten-frames: fill the ten, then add the rest. They write the split each time, so the strategy is on paper as well as in counters.

Ask: Seven and six. How many of the six make ten? Split the six: three to make ten, three left.

10 minTen and some more
Once a ten is made, the total is easy to read: ten and three is thirteen.

Ask: Ten and three. Do not count from one; just read it: thirteen.

Two half-sessions instead? End Session A after filling the first ten; start Session B with the worksheet sums.

Show “Bridge through ten”. The smaller number splits so the bigger one reaches ten, then the leftover part is added on. Pause on the split and ask the class how many make ten and how many are left before you read the total.

The missing part

Take away is the bar turned around. The whole is on top and one part is shown; the other part is hidden. Ten take away six is really the missing part of a ten made of six and something. Seeing subtraction as a missing part turns a hard-feeling operation into the same part-part-whole picture children already trust.

Put ten counters on the bar. Show six in one part and cover the other with a cup. Ten take away six is the part under the cup.

Ask: The whole is ten. I can see six. How many are hiding? Think before you count.

20 minTake away, find the part
Pairs work the worksheet: for nine take away four, they show the whole and the part, then find the missing part and check by joining the two parts back.

Ask: You said five. Do four and five make nine? Lift the cup and check. Now say the take away: nine take away four is five.

10 minThe other way round
Turn one around: six and how many make eleven? It is the same missing-part hunt.

Ask: Six is one part, eleven is the whole. Count on from six to eleven, or think of the missing part.

Birds land on a wire and birds fly away. Landing adds; flying away takes away. It is the same bar all week: the birds already there are one part, the birds that land are the other part, and together they make the whole flock.
